Hair: Where to Splurge and where to Save

Last week I did a post about where to splurge and where to save when buying makeup products.  I had several requests for the same post about hair products/tools.  Here is my advice for where it is important to splurge and important to save when it comes to hair care.

WHERE TO SPLURGE
-Shampoo/Conditioner
Buying professional shampoo and conditioner is a must in my book, but it doesn't have to be a huge splurge.  Biolage and other Matrix shampoos, as well as Redken products, are relatively cheap when it comes to professional hair care (they often have duo deals for $20), and paying the extra money is definitely worth it.  They will help decrease build up and restore moisture, two things that a lot of cheap shampoos don't do.

-Flat Iron
This is another must in my book.  Not only do professional flat irons work better and faster, but they are also a lot less damaging.  PLUS professional flat irons need to be replaced a lot less frequently, making it worth the extra investment.

-Blow Dryer
This goes along the same lines as flat irons and curling irons.  Blow dryers can be deceivingly damaging.  Cheap blow dryers get unnecessarily hot.  Professional blow dryers are more gentle and work more quickly.
-Haircut/Color
This is another splurge that doesn't have to be insanely expensive.  You don't have to spend $200 for a cut/color, all I'm suggesting is to avoid the really cheap chain salons and beauty schools.  If your hair gets ruined at a cheap salon, you'll end up paying more than you would have originally just to get it fixed.  Find a salon that has a good reputation and fork out a little extra money, it's worth it!

WHERE TO SAVE
-Paddle/round brush
A cheap brush might not last as long as an expensive one, but at least it will do the job without being damaging to your hair.  I have purchased several cheap brushes that work just great!

-Backcombing comb
My all time favorite backcomb is under $5.  It's all I have used for the past 3 years and it works amazing!

-Curling irons
My favorite curling irons are the Hot Tools curling irons.  They are surprisingly cheap on Amazon.  The get hot enough to curl your hair really well, they are easy to use and they last a long time.

-Styling products
Being a professional stylist, I obviously love professional hair products more than the cheap ones.  However, if you are trying to save money, do it with your styling products, rather than your shampoo and conditioner.  Since they are just for styling they won't do any damage to your hair.
